LungMAP Objectives
The overall objective of LungMAP is to build an open-access, comprehensive molecular and cellular atlas of the human lung that serves as a reference for understanding normal development, lung function, and disease.
Phase 3 of LungMAP expands this mission from defining normal human lung development to understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of pediatric and adult lung diseases. LungMAP integrates high-resolution single-cell, spatial, imaging, and multi-omic data to identify disease-associated cell types and states, disrupted molecular pathways, mechanisms of disease initiation and progression, and potential therapeutic targets.
LungMAP is also advancing AI-enabled access and analysis of these resources. Through conversational and agent-based AI tools such as LungChat, researchers can interrogate complex lung datasets using natural-language questions, integrate findings across molecular and spatial modalities, connect cellular programs to pathways and potential therapeutic interventions, and generate reproducible analyses and visualizations. Together, these capabilities transform LungMAP from a molecular atlas into an interactive platform for data-driven discovery in human lung biology and disease.
